Walking in Divine Confidence: The Beautiful Balance of Self-Love and Humility

Latoya Morez

"Love your neighbor as yourself" - Mark 12:31. This scripture presupposes something profound: you must have a healthy love for yourself to properly love others. Let's explore this delicate balance between self-love and humility, drawing wisdom from both scripture and life experience.

Having Biblical Confidence. Blessed assurance

The Biblical Foundation of Self-Love

When we examine Psalm 139:14, "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made," we see a clear acknowledgment of our divine worth. This isn't pride - it's recognition of God's masterful creation. Think about it: would you look at a Picasso and say it's worthless? Then why do we sometimes do that with God's masterpiece - ourselves?

The world's version of self-love often promotes selfishness and narcissism. Biblical self-love, however, is rooted in understanding our identity as children of God. "See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!" (1 John 3:1)

The Yeshua Model: Perfect Balance

Let's look at how Yeshua modeled this balance. He knew exactly who He was - the Son of God, yet He washed His disciples' feet (John 13:3-5). That's the kind of confidence we're talking about - one that's secure enough to serve.

  • Consider these powerful examples from His life:

    • He stood firm against temptation because He knew His identity (Matthew 4:1-11)

    • He spoke with authority yet welcomed children (Mark 10:13-16)

    • He claimed His divine status yet submitted to the Father's will (John 6:38)

Practical Application for Modern Life

So what does this look like in your daily walk? Let me break it down:

  • 1. Setting Boundaries

    • Saying "no" without guilt because you understand your worth in Christ

    • Example: When that friend constantly drains your energy, it's okay to create healthy space

  • 2. Accepting Criticism

    • Having the confidence to receive feedback without being destroyed by it

    • Remember: Your worth isn't in people's opinions but in God's declaration over you

  • 3. Serving Others

    • Using your gifts without false humility or pride

    • Example: Volunteering not to be seen, but because you're secure in who God made you to be

The Warning Signs

Let's be real - there's a difference between healthy self-love and pride. Here are some checkpoints:

  • Pride Says:

    • "I don't need anyone's help"

    • "I'm better than others"

    • "My way is the only way"

  • Healthy Self-Love Says:

    • "I am valuable AND I need community"

    • "I am gifted AND others are too"

    • "I have wisdom to share AND much to learn"

Daily Practices for Growing in Biblical Self-Love

  1. Start your day with identity declarations from Scripture

    • "I am chosen" (1 Peter 2:9)

    • "I am loved" (Jeremiah 31:3)

    • "I am capable through Christ" (Philippians 4:13)

Remember, true confidence isn't about feeling superior - it's about being so secure in God's love that you don't need to prove anything to anyone. As Maya Angelou once said, "When you know you are of worth — not asking it but knowing it — you walk into a room with a particular power."

The Revolutionary Result

When we grasp this truth - that we can love ourselves because God first loved us - it revolutionizes how we move through the world. We can extend grace because we've received it. We can set boundaries because we value what God values. We can serve others because we're secure in our identity.

Your assignment this week: Write down three things God says about you and three ways you can show love to others from that place of security. Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup, but when you're filled with God's love, it naturally overflows to others.

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb." (Psalm 139:13) Walk in that truth today, beloved.
